"FAMILY DAY" TRIP ABOARD DANA PRIDE
DFG Fishing Passport Program and Friends of Rollo/United Anglers Host Youngsters and Families For Good Times and Wide Open Bite
What better way for kids to wind up summer than with a great day on the ocean, enjoying the Southern California sun, fresh ocean breezes and the fun of fishing with friends and family? This was all the reason more than 80 sons, daughters, fathers, mothers and friends needed to board the Dana Pride for an afternoon 1/2-day fishing trip out of Dana Wharf Landing Monday, August 20.
And if this wasn't enough incentive to climb aboard the spacious and fast 95-footer, this trip was designated as a special "Family Day" adventure on the Dana Pride. This meant that the United Anglers/Friends of Rollo youth fishing program covered the cost of the trip and rental tackle for all boys and girls 15 and under. This provided a great opportunity for families to get out on the water together and spend quality time in the great outdoors. Because this trip was coordinated to draw attention to the Department of Fish and Game's ongoing California Fishing Passport Program, DFG representatives Carrie Wilson, Mary Payten and Larry Eng were on hand to distribute Fishing Passport Booklets and educational materials and to stamp kids passports when they caught new fish species.
The best news is, the weather cooperated and everything bit, said United Anglers of Southern California's Dan Fink. We only had to run about a mile from the harbor, and soon both kids and adults were busy reeling in calico and sand bass, barracuda, mackerel and sculpin. The big bonito were boiling around the boat and gave the day some real excitement, as several of the youngsters successfully hooked and landed these tough fighting fish after being taken around the boat. Our skipper Chris and his entire crew did a fantastic job keeping up with the non-stop action, keeping the kids on fish and out of tangles quite a job given the great turnout, added Fink.

As is usual for these types of trips, several different groups and individuals contributed to make this a memorable day for kids and adults alike. The DFG coordinated this adventure as part of its Fishing Passport Program and Friends of Rollo/UA stepped up to fund the trip for participating youngsters, said Fink. Lenny Vu of United Anglers of Southern California was constantly busy helping the fishermen and snapping the photos that will make lasting memories for these youngsters. We also want to thank Dana Wharf Landing owner Donna Hanson for making this possible, along with Mustad, who graciously provided all the hooks for this large group of anglers.
