NEXT MLPA STUDY REGION WILL BE NORTH CENTRAL COAST, ACCORDING TO ANNOUNCEMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY
United Anglers of Southern California Already Meeting With Northern California’s Coastside Fishing Club to Discuss Strategy, Reminding Southern Anglers
“We’re All in This Together”
December 21, 2006 – California Secretary of Resources Mike Chrisman is scheduled to announce today that the next MLPA study region will be the North Central portion of the California coast, extending from Pigeon Point to above the Farallon Islands. United Anglers of Southern California President Tom Raftican broke this news to thousands of UASC members in a special bulletin, while reminding southern fishermen that this is no time to relax or let their guards down.
“While we feel this was the right decision based on economic reasons and the need to refine the process, we’re committed to work alongside Coastside Fishing Club in their efforts to achieve the widest access for recreational anglers in this area,” Raftican said. In fact, Raftican and UASC legal counsel April Wakeman were meeting with Coastside Fishing Club President Bob Franko at the time of today’s announcement.
“This may seem like a Christmas present for Southern California fishermen, but we can’t get complacent. We need to use our time to wisely to help defend access for our fishing brethren in the North and prepare for the future closer to home. The support of Southern California anglers will be essential in securing a balanced approach to MLPA implementation — one that recognizes sportfishing’s high conservation value, economic importance and light footprint,” added Raftican.
Raftican also noted that the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), an organization representing the fishing industry and the interests of fisherman nationwide, is providing its strong support to the allied efforts in California working to preserve recreational fishing access. “Although these are challenging circumstances, we’re also encouraged how Round Two of the MLPA implementation has galvanized the industry and anglers alike,” Raftican said. “We all recognize the importance of conservation and the need for change — we just want to see it balanced with reasonable recreational access for today and for future generations.”
